Packing

Backpacks — We lived out of these backpacks in Europe for 3 months and could have comfortably stayed for 3 more (or longer). They are perfect for a short or long trip, and there is a men’s and women’s version. We really love these packs because they come with a detachable day pack for excursions. Check out our detailed packing lists for men and women to see everything we packed for our European travels.

Packing cubes — One thing about extended travel that can be frustrating is not having your bag organized. These packing cubes make it easy to organize all your clothing and other personal items and take the headache out of long-term travel.

Electronics organizer — Keep all your electronics organized so you don’t have to dig through a bag of loose wires just to find the one cord you’re looking for.

Clothing

Rain jacket — A lightweight, packable raincoat is a must for traveling during the shoulder seasons, which is the best time to travel, in my humble opinion. These raincoats are stylish, keep you dry, and breathe well.

Walking shoes — These boots are durable and great for walking trails, sidewalks, or cobblestone streets. They were my go-to footwear during our 3 months in Europe.

Liana prefers a sandal with good tread and arch support like this one.

Sunglasses — These budget friendly glasses are some of the most durable we’ve owned. Sunglass Warehouse offers 15% off all orders and free shipping over $25. There are tons of styles to choose from!

Electronics

External chargers — We always travel with external charges. The large one can charge your phone at least 3 times. The small one fits easily in a backpack or bag for emergency charges.

External hard drive and case —Pics or it didn’t happen! This external hard drive is a perfect way to back up your photos and videos from your travels. Now you won’t have to explain to your friends and family why you lost that picture of Sasquatch.

Kindle — I read a lot. In the morning, afternoon, and night. This kindle is a great way to bring a library with you on your travels while taking up less space than a single book. This case is great to protect your device and turns off the Kindle by simply closing it.

Selfie stick — Yeah, I’ve become that selfie stick wielding tourist, and I’m proud of it. At first I thought they would only be helpful for people with short T-Rex arms, but it works great! Since we got ours we’ve been able to take way better shots of ourselves and the scenery behind us. I really like this model because it has a detachable Bluetooth remote and the grip turns into a tripod for more portrait style photos.

Headphones — Whether you’re working on the road, watching Netflix, or just listening to your favorite metal album these headphones are the best bang for your buck. Crying babies on flights are no match for them-enjoy!

Travel tripod — This travel tripod is a great addition for amateur and seasoned photographers. It easily keeps most standard sized cameras and phones steady. The flexible legs can wrap around pipes, railings, or tree branches to capture different angles on your trip.

Just in Case

Leatherman — I really don’t go anywhere without my multi-tool. Pliers, knife, screwdrivers, scissors, and bottle opener are all built into this tool. I’ve had mine for over 10 years and it works like it’s new. Here is the one I recommend but there are literally dozens of options to choose from to meet your needs. When traveling by air, remember to keep this in your checked luggage!

LifeStraw water bottle — Water is life (sorry, had a little Dune flashback). LifeStraw removes bacteria, parasites, and chemicals. Plus, it’s super easy to use – simply fill up the bottle and start drinking! They are great for international travel, camping, or even everyday use.

Travel binoculars or Monocular telescope — No need to squint when that bear, whale or big-horn sheep comes into view. These travel binoculars bring everything up close and personal. If you’re like me and would rather pretend you’re a pirate, this light-weight monocular is for you. Both options come with a photo adapter to capture the far away action on your phone.

Sewing kit — Never get caught with your pants down (again anyway). Well, at least don’t get caught without a button. This is a great way ensure you can make minor fixes to your wardrobe. Don’t know how to sew? That’s okay, you can learn anything on YouTube!

Dry phone pouch — Not sending your phone to a watery grave is a top priority. Keep your phone dry when you’re trapped on top of a mountain during a rain storm or when you’re hanging out at the pool. These waterproof cases also float and fit cash, cards, and ID’s.

Umbrella — For rain or shine—literally! Don’t want to get drenched in an unexpected downpour? Or need to shield your pasty skin from UV rays (like me)? This compact umbrella will fit in most bags, so you’ll be ready to protect yourself from all the elements.

Headlamp — Headlamps are the best option when you need both hands to dig through your stuff or have your hands free. These Pelican headlamps are really bright and durable.

Microfiber towels — These compact towels are perfect for a stop at the beach or quick shower. They are super-fast drying, so no soggy towels hanging around for days.

We hope this 2018 Best Travel Gear Guide will help you find an awesome gift for your traveling friends and family, or something for your next adventure.
