Savannah, Georgia has interested us for a while. While we didn’t see anyone walking invisible dogs or getting sucked into a murder mystery, we had a great time. There are many activities in Savannah you’ll most likely spend money on: pubs, restaurants, and parking (you will definitely be spending money on parking). 1. River Street

Paved with cobblestones over 200 years old the historic River Street is a great place to explore. The revived waterfront once held large warehouses storing cotton to be exported to New York or London. Now the warehouses have been converted into boutiques, inns, galleries, pubs, and restaurants. Just between River Street and the Savannah River is the river walk. It’s a perfect place to take pictures, learn some history, and watch ships from around the globe coming and going from one of the US’s biggest ports.

2. Forsyth Park

This 30 acre park established in the 1840s is the figurative heart of the city. This beautiful park is perfect for a stroll, nap, or picnic under the well manicured oaks. The centerpiece of the park is Forsyth Fountain. Erected in 1859 this famous fountain is one of Savannah’s most photographed places. The park and fountain were featured in the 1997 movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It is pretty much impossible to visit and not snap a photo or selfie. But like I said, no sign of invisible dogs (you lied to me Kevin Spacey).

3. Historic District

Strolling through the streets of Savannah from Forsyth Park to the river is an adventure itself. You can walk through one or all of the 22 historic squares. Bask in the architecture of the Victorian Gothic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Wander through cemeteries lined with oak, magnolia, and dogwood. Or just walk through the streets and relive the past through the historic homes and inns, scattered throughout the district.

 

 

4. Botanical Gardens

These 10 acre gardens consist of rose, herb, vegetable, camellia, perennial, shade, and fern gardens. Set around a small pond, nature trails weave throughout the gardens. It’s a very beautiful and well maintained place and is worth a stop if you’d like a little peace and tranquility during your visit. 5. Tybee Island

20 minutes from downtown Savannah, Tybee Island offers 5 miles of beautiful Atlantic Coastline. Plan accordingly when you travel to the Savannah area because you are going to want to spend a whole day at Tybee Beach. This public beach is great for walking, biking or just catching some rays. Head to Tybee Pier. Grab an ice cream or a beer (or both). Go fishing or dolphin watching. While a bit commercialized with hotels and resorts Tybee Beach offers free sand and waves for all to enjoy. Grab a book, pack a lunch, a cooler, and relax.

Savannah is a place where the past and present live harmoniously. A place where the thriving film industry can be seen creating new cinema on streets that predate the birth of our nation.
